War service: Egypt, Western Front Taken on strength, 7th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 7 January 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 26 March 1916; found guilty, at sea, 30 March 1916, of (1) being late for guard relief; (2) being absent without leave from Guard Room: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2; disembarked Marseilles, France, 31 March 1916. Mustered as Driver, 15 May 1917. Admitted to 5th Division Rest Station, 22 May 1917 (pyrexia, unknown origin); discharged to duty, and rejoined Bn, in the field, 28 May 1917. On leave, 1 August 1917; rejoined Bn from leave, 13 August 1917. Found guilty, 25 January 1918, of (1) double ranking on 20 January 1918, contrary to 4th Army Traffic Order No 20; (2) neglecting to obey an order of a Traffic Control Sentry, 20 January 1918: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2. On leave to United Kingdom, 6 September 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 26 September 1918. Appointed Lance Corporal Driver, 23 December 1918. Marched out for return to Australia, 19 January 1919.
