Military Medal

'For conspicuous and continued gallantry and determined devotion to duty. From 8th August to 1st September 1918, Sapper NANKIVELL has consistently carried out most gallant and valuable work in the front line; particularly on the night of 23rd/24th August, in laying out the Jumping-off tape for the 2nd Australian Infantry Brigade beyond PROYART, under fire, taking great pains to check his work to ensure accuracy. He has, on a great number of occasions, surveyed the front line posts - repeatedly exposing himself in daylight in order to be accurate. Again, on the outskirts of PERONNE, on the morning of September 1st., this Sapper most gallantly volunteered, and brought in wounded, to a place of safety, under direct machine gun fire.'
