Embarked Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, Gallipoli, 16 August 1915.

Wounded in action, 27 August 1915 (gun shot wound, thigh), and admitted to 16th Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to England, 30 August 1915, and admitted to King George Hospital, Stamford Street, London SE, 16 September 1916; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Larkhill, 1 October 1915.

Appointed Temporary Sergeant, 11 September 1916; reverted to Private, 25 January 1917.

Appointed EDP [Extra Duty Pay] Corporal, 1 February 1917.

Appointed Acting Sergeant, 7 March 1917; reverted to the ranks, 17 July 1917.

Appointed Acting Corporal without pay, 17 July 1917; reverted to the ranks, 20 August 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 20 August 1917; joined 39th Bn, in the field, 1 September 1917.

Appointed Lance Corporal, 12 November 1917.

Wounded in action (second occasion), 10 February 1918 ( gun shot wounds, abdomen); admitted to 10th Australian Field Ambulance, 11 February 1918, and transferred to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station.
