Went to Sydney in 1888. Matriculated in 1889 and then studied Law. He opened a practice as a solicitor in Glen Innes in 1884. In 1901 he married Elizabeth Gidley King (daughter of G.B. Gidley King, General Manager of the Peel River L. & M. Co. Estate at Goonoo Goonoo). Abbott served a political apprenticeship as an alderman on the Glen Innes council for twelve years; being Mayor for 4 successive years. He became MHR for New England, New South Wales in 1913 and was re-elected unopposed in the 1917 Federal election while on active service abroad. He served in the Commonwealth Senate, 1925-28.

Appointed Major, 5th Light Horse, 28 September 1914; resigned, 27 October 1914. Commanded 12th Light Horse, 16 March 1915, rank of Lt Colonel; 10th Light Horse, 30 August 1915. Commanded C Group, AIF Training Group, 5 July 1916; 63rd Bn, 12 May 1917; re-transferred to 12th Light Horse, 21 September 1917; attached to 30th Bn, 29 October 1917.

Appointment terminated, 22 June 1918.

Appointed Honorary Colonel, AMF, 14 May 1929.
