'During the operations along the MENIN ROAD on 20th September, 1917, whilst engaged on the construction of a strong point at BLACK WATCH CORNER near POLYGON WOOD, the officer in charge of the infantry party attached to the engineers was wounded. L/Cpl NESS immediately took charge of the party and displayed remarkable gallantry and sound judgment in carrying out his responsibilities and gave great encouragement to those under him. His work throughout the whole of the operations was worthy of great praise. He gave valuable assistance at a critical period.'
