Military Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the night of 16th April, 1918, north of BIRE. Owing to heavy machine gun fire and shell fire progress at a point near the road was very difficult. When the rest of the trench had been completed and this N.C.O. had already completed a strenuous task under heavy fire, he volunteered (in company with two others) to finish the trench near the road. He worked steadily and courageously under the fire and his gallant conduct and devotion to duty resulted in the fire trench being left complete for its entire length. This incicident was merely typical of his splendid work throughout the night.'
