Military Medal 'Near BRAY, on 24th August, 1918, this soldier was conspicuous for his gallantry and devotion to duty. At the final objective, he was one of a bombing party to mop up two machine guns, which were giving trouble to the advancing troops. He captured several prisoners and single handed attacked three Germans. One of these fired at him, the bullet piercing his steel helmet and cutting his scalp. Although badly shaken he bombed the enemy out and remained on duty helping in the consolidation. It was only when he was ordered to go to the Dressing Station by his Platoon Commander that he reluctantly went out. He set an excellent example of initiative and personal courage to his comrades.'
