'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in a raid on the enemy's trenches. When strong opposition was encountered he led a bombing attack, overcoming the enemy's resistance by his splendid leadership and determination, and enabled the raiding party to enter the enemy's trench. He took over the command of an officer who was wounded, and accomplished his task with great skill. He set a magnificent example throughout.'
