'Commencing at 6 p.m. on 6th October, 1917, he worked as stretcher bearer almost without rest for 72 hours between DE KNOET FARM and railway dugouts (Sheet 28 D.26.c.1.3.) the former position being in front of an R.A.P. and about 500 yards behind the front line. He was responsible for the dressing and evacuation of many wounded under intense enemy barrage at the former post. He worked with the utmost disregard of his personal safety and his cheerfulness was infectious among his comrades. His fine work and good example have been marked over many months.'
