'In the operations against the enemy position at MONT DE MERRIS near STRAZEELE on night 2nd/3rd June, 1918, Corporal NICHOLLS displayed conspicuous gallantry. during the advance he kept two sections well in hand and on reaching an enemy trench rushed and captured single handed a machine gun and three of the enemy who had temporarily held up our advacing troops. Later in the morning he took charge of carrying parties and succeeded in getting supplies to front line under machine gun fire.'
