'On the morning of 20th September 1917, during the attack on POLYGON WOOD east of YPRES, whilst getting into position the Company was heavily shelled, Cpl. NICKEL rendered most valuable assistance in getting the Company assembled. Whilst the attack was in progress he ably supervised the handling and supervision of the guns. After the position was captured he attended to the placing of the guns and when heavily shelled, regardless of all personal danger, he continued to visit his positions. He set a splendid example to his men throughout.'
