'On the night 21/22nd August, 1918, in the vicinity of HAPPY VALLEY, north of BRAY, he showed great gallantry and devotion to duty. In the face of heavy machine gun and artillery fire he volunteered to go out and rescue wounded men from shell holes in No Man's Land and succeeded in bringing in two wounded men to the R.A.P. During the whole day he was carrying wounded from RA.A.P. to Dressing Post through very heavy artillery fire round Quarry in K.118.a. His disregard of danger and cheerfulness were a great example for others.'
