Proceeded overseas to France, 3 May 1917; taken on strength, 5th Bn, in the field, 11 May 1917. Wounded in action, 26 January 1918 (shell wound, foot), and admitted to 2nd Australian Field Ambulance, and transferred to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station; to 8th Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, 27 January 1918; to England, 31 January 1918, and admitted to Military Hospital, Endell Street, London (gun shot wound, bullet, foot); transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 6 February 1918; discharged on furlough, 21 February 1918, to report to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 7 March 1918. Found guilty, 1 April 1918, of being absent without leave in London from 11 am, 7 March, until 10.15 am, 1 April 1918: awarded forfeiture of 25 days' pay; total forfeiture: 50 days' pay. Proceeded overseas to France, 24 June 1918; rejoined Bn, in the field, 30 June 1918. Transferred to 1st Divisional Train, 23 December 1918, and mustered as Driver.
