'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Whilst he was constructing a strong point our attack infantry commenced to retire. He took charge of the situation at a critical moment, arranged for the destruction of two enemy guns, and did not leave the post until confidence was restored. The presence of this post was of great assistance to our left flank. He has always shwon the greatest coolness under fire, and has since been wounded whilst supervising a wiring party.'
