Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This officer led his platoon in a night attack on a nest of machine guns in the edge of a wood, five being captured. When the objective was reached, he was the only officer left with the company. He took charge and reorganized it, his example under heavy fire cheering and inspiring the men. The next day he discovered a party of the enemy with a machine gun forming up in some low ground. Getting a Lewis gun, he fired it himself, causing thirty casualties, and scattering them. Later, he inflicted a further fifteen casualties on the same party crossing a ridge. He was eventually wounded himself. He did splendid service.'
