'At POZIERES, FRANCE, on the night of the 21st. August 1916 when the enemy were putting up an extremely heavy barrage of artillery, volunteers were called for to evacuate a severely wounded man. Sergeant O'CARROLL volunteered and in company with another man carried the patient safely and without delay to the advanced Dressing Station. The manner in which this N.C.O. organised his parties were worthy of the highest praise and his conduct on this occasion most exemplary.'
