'For conspicuous gallantry and resource in action. When a strong party of the enemy attempted to rush his platoon, he took a rifle from his runner, shot the officer, and, directing one of his Lewis guns onto the party, repelled the attack. Later in the advance he went under heavy machine gun fire to the assistance of his company commander, who was wounded, and got severely wounded himself. He set a fine example to his men.'
