'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty Battle of YPRES (Phase 5) 12th October 1917. Under a very heavy artillery barrage this man repeatedly went out, and dressed the wounded, carrying them into our own lines. When all Company Stretcher Bearers had been killed or wounded he volunteered for stretcher bearer duty, and continued to work 48 hours without rest, displaying great coolness and courage.'
