War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked from Australia, 20 December 1915. Joined the 2nd Bn at Zeitoun, Egypt, 14 February 1916. Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 22 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 28 March 1916. Wounded in action (gun shot wound, right leg), 22-23 July 1916. Admitted to No 16 General Hospital, Le Treport, 24 July 1916; transferred to England, 27 July 1916, and admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham (wound severe), 29 August 1916. Transferred to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, 29 September 1916; marched out to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 14 March 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 9 October 1917; rejoined unit, 15 October 1917. Wounded in action (second occasion; compound fracture, left foot), 27 October 1917; evacuated to England, 1 November 1917, and admitted to Kitchener War Hospital, Brighton, 2 November 1917; amputation. Granted furlough, 1-15 June 1918, to report to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, Southall. Commenced return to Australia, 23 July 1918; discharged, 6 April 1919 (medical unfitness).
