'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in action East of YPRES on 12th October 1917. This N.C.O. did magnificent work in searching for and bringing in wounded at considerable risk to himself, the Area being swept by enemy shell and machine gun fire. He set a fine example of courage and cheerfulness which had a beneficial effect on the men he was leading.'
