'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in command of a fighting patrol sent out to obtain identification from an enemy position at a farm. Finding the farm strongly held, and large enemy working parties in the vicinity, he sent back his patrol, and with his platoon sergeant made a careful reconnaissance of the position under machine gun and rifle fire. Next night, when his company attacked over the same ground, he led his platoon with great dash, and captured three machine guns and eighteen men.'
