War service: Egypt, Western Front Allotted to 59th Bn from 2nd Training Bn, Zeitoun, 26 February 1916; taken on strength of 59th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 26 February 1916. Promoted Lance Corporal, 9 May 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1918; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Transferred to, and taken on strength of 15 Australian Light Mortar Battery, 5 July 1916. Admitted to No 1 Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 17 October 1916 (influenza); transferred to Ambulance Train, 24 October 1916; to No 3 Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne, 24 October 1916; marched into Australian General Base Depot, Etaples, 10 November 1916. Tried by Field General Court Martial on a charge of while on active service leaving his guard without orders, in that he at Etaples on 12 November 1916,when a guard at the Australian General Base Depot left the guard without permission until surrendering himself about 2000 hours, 15 November 1916: found Guilty on charge and sentenced to 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour; sentence commuted to 90 days' Field Punishment No 1, no date stated.
