'In the neighbourhood of PERONNE under intense shell and machine gun fire these two men carried wounded from the R.A.P. to Ambulance Relay Post working with unselfish courage and cheerfulness that was inspiring to all. The carry of 1/2 mile was under direct enemy observation and fire, and they continued their work for twelve hours until the R.A.P. was cleared. Their devotion to duty and utter disregard of personal danger set a high standard and example to other bearers.'
