'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack. When the officer in charge of the attacking platoon was killed, and a large number of casualties occurred, he took charge, re-organized the remainder of the platoon and the supporting platoon, and led them forward in the face of heavy shell and machine gun fire.'
