'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Together with two officers, he succeeded in extinguishing a serious fire which had broken out in an ammunition dump close to his battery position, thus preventing the destruction of ammunition and probably also of the guns. They carried out the work admist exploding ammunition.'
