Military Medal 'For conspicuous bravery and valuable service during a raid on BOIS-de-VAIRE on 15th June, 1918. These two N.C.O.s [BISHOP and 5999 J. CRAIG] after successfully leading their sections through the objective and completing their task brought their parties bak to the point of assembly intact. There they were informed that the Platoon Sergeant was lying wounded in the objective now 150 yards behind them. Realising that his capture would be of value to the enemy they put a covering party out and returned to find him. After some search under heavy machine gun fire from a flank they found the wounded Sergeant and carried him back to our lines, thereby saving their comrade and denying the enemy the identification.' Second entry reads: 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at VAIRE WOOD, north east of CORBIE on 4th July, 1918. When his Platoon Commander was killed during an attack on an enemy post he assumed command and by his energy and determination carried his platoon through. He continued in command during the consolidation and until the close of the operation. He set a fine example throughout.'
