Admitted to No 1 Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 6 October 1915 (diarrhoea); transferred to General Hospital, Gibraltar, 15 October 1915; to England, 1 November 1915, and admitted to No 2 Southern General Hospital, Bristol, 6 November 1915. Proceeded overseas to France to join the British Expeditionary Force, 24 March 1916; rejoined 17th Bn, in the field, 3 May 1916. Wounded in action, 29 July 1916 (gun shot wound, left wrist), and admitted to 4th Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 8th Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, 30 July 1916; to England, 2 August 1916, and admitted same day to Royal Herbert Hospital, Woolwich; transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 17 August 1916; discharged on furlough, 4 September 1916. Appointed Extra Regimental Corporal, 5th Training Bn, Rollestone, 12 April 1917.
