'At AUGER WOOD on the 11th August 1918 this N.C.O. showed great tactical ability in the handling of his section under heavy machine gun and artillery fire. Whilst mopping up the Wood and during a patrol which was sent out to reconnoitre this N.C.O. established a gun postion at about S.19.b.5.0. He engaged the enemy who were working up trench at about S. 19.b.5.3. They were on considerable force. Not withstandidng his section being under heavy machine gun and tank gun fire at close range this N.C.O. succeeded in holding up the enemy advance. The position selected by this N.C.O. for the machine gun was blown out by artillery fire. This N.C.O. showed remarkable bravery and coolheadedness in establishing another position and again bringing the gun into action. Had it not been for the efforts of this N.C.O. it is probable that the enemy would have been able to work into the gap between the left flank of the 12th Battalion and the right flank of the 11th Battalion thereby enabling the enemy to bring a rear flank on the 12th Battalion.'
