Found guilty, 25 January 1917, of being absent without leave, 22 January, to 24 January 1917: awarded 1 day's Field Punishment No 2; forfeited total of 4 days' pay. Marched into No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 5 March 1917. Admitted to Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley, 13 March 1917 (broncho-pneumonia, mentally ill); transferred to Murthly War Hospital, 24 March 1917. Marched into No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 19 May 1917. Embarked HT 'Euripides' for return to Australia, 21 July 1917; diembarked Melbourne, 18 September 1917, for onward travel to Sydney.
