Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. The enemy opened up a heavy fire upon our men, who were assaulting the final objective, from a certain redoubt. He, together with another Sergeant, went forward to this redoubt, where ten of the enemy were killed, two captured, and the remainder routed. This performance was one of great coolness and courage, and by this gallant deed many valuable lives were saved.'
