Military Medal

'During the attack east of MONT. ST. QUENTIN near PERONNE, on September 2nd 1918, this N.C.O. was in charge of two sections attacking along KOROS ALLEY. When confronted by an enemy post with two machine guns, he led one section over the top and worked behind the guns. His party had several casualties, but this N.C.O. went forward with the remaining men, capturing the machine guns, and killing the crews. Later, when his Platoon Commander was wounded, he took charge, and at the head of the platoon, fought his way to the objective. While consolidating, he was badly wounded. He set a brave example to his men throughout.' [Earlier recommendation, 1916, reads: 'During the attack on the GIRD and the MAZE on 5th November, 1916, showed great pluck, initiative and devotion to duty. He continued to serve his two Lewis guns when only 3 men out of 12 were left. He showed initiative and appreciation of the position in that he was largely instrumental in holding an advanced captured trench against several attempts of the enemy to retake it.']
