'Is brought to notice for gallantry and devotion to duty when on reconnaissance near HEBUTERNE on the 29th March, 1918. Regardless of great personal risk he proceeded down a communication trench occupied by the enemy, for the purpose of obtaining his numbers and dispositions. This was a most daring feat, as the enemy was strongly suspected of holding the line in great strength. This proved to be correct. In order to make his investigations, and in obtaining the desired information, this non-commissioned Officer took his life in his hands. There was no cover from observation or fire, and when he proceeded on his task he was fully aware that discovery meant destruction. For his gallantry he is strongly recommended for distinction.'
