'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near ASCENSION WOOD on 18th September, 1918. Shortly after crossing the RED LINE, owing to heavy enemy machine gun fire, the advance was delayed. by immediately taking forward a Lewis Gun and engaging the enemy guns he enabled his company to work forward with minimum loss. On two other occasions he affording covering fire to the company which materially assisted them in their advance. By his initiative, skilful handling of his gun and cool daring, he not only set a fine example to his section, but was responsible to a large extent for the success of his company.'
