Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and ability as platoon sergeant from 25 February to 16 September, 1918. In February last and early March, during the garrison of Wyschaete, he nightly led patrols on the battalion front, gaining much valuable information. On one occasion, single handed, he bombed an enemy listening post, killing the garrison of three. In the operations at Lihons, in August, when his company officer had been wounded, he at once took command of the platoon, and led them forward to their final objective, he himself being wounded during the consolidation.'

On the occasion on the German trenches, Pte Philpots, with three other mat-men, was the first to rush forward from their advanced position. On reaching the enemy wire they at once began to cut a path through. While the parties were in the trench Pte Philpots worked hard on the wire, preparing a path for the return. He also brought in a prisoner. Pte Philpots is once of the original members of the Battalion. He is very young and together with the other three mat-men was chosen on account of his smallness. Throughout the Peninsula he was exceptionally plucky and was one of the first to volunteer for the raid.'
