'During the operations on the 9th October, 1917, at BROODSEINDE RIDGE, this man who is a Lewis Gunner displayed great coolness and courage under heavy machine gun and rifle fire. He fired his Lewis gun over stump tops and from the side of some causing heavy loss in the enemy ranks, and was responsible for the capture of over 20 prisoners. His coolness and courage set a splendid example to all ranks throughout the attack.'
