War service: Western Front Embarked Sydney, 13 May 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 10 July 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 23 September 1916; joined 15th Bn in the field, 2 November 1916. Appointed Lance Corporal, 5 February 1917. Wounded accidentally, 21 February 1917 (bullet wound, chest), and admitted to 2nd Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to No 1/1 S.W.D. Casualty Clearing Station, 21 February 1917; to No 11 Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 26 February 1917; to England, 25 March 1917, and admitted to 1st London General Hospital, Camberwell, 27 March 1917. Discharged on furlough, 4 June 1917, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 19 June 1917. Court of Enquiry, Ribemont, 17 April 1917, found that the soldier was in no way to blame.
