'During the attack on Mont St. Quentin, near Peronne, on 1st and 2nd September 1918, the advance was at first held up by the superiority of the enemy's numbers and many machine guns, and a gap occurred between this officer's brigade and troops on the flank. He immediately moved up his troops which were in support, and manoeuvering with perfect order, in spite of intense artillery and machine gun fire, he formed a defensive flank, which secured the attacking units of the brigade. His ready realization of the situation and initiative enabled further progress to be made in the attack, and his gallant leading was of valuable service at a critical moment.'
