War service: Egypt, Palestine Admitted to No 2 Australian Stationary Hospital, Port Said, 18 September 1916 (lymphangitis); discharged to Details, 28 September 1916. Killed in action, 23 December 1916. Buried, Chaplain H.K. GORDON, East of Turkish Redoubt and South of Red Crescent Hospital, Magdaba, 24 December 1916; subsequently reinterred at Kantara War Cemetery. Eye-witness report, 2890 Trooper J. ROLLO, 10th Light Horse Regiment, 2 February 1917: 'Ben was in A Troop - one of the best. We were mounted - fixed bayonets - & charging the Turkish Redoubt from the rear. The Turks bobbed down into their funk holes so that we could not reach them & one of the must have shot him after we passed. I saw him fall - killed instantaneously - and the stretcher-bearers showed me the bullet afterwards which had flattened after passing in at his back.'
