'At WESTHOEK RIDGE 20th September 1917. After the objective had been gained, he rendered valuable assistance by dressing the wounded and stretcher bearing for many hours under heavy shell fire. Later, when a counter attack seemed imminent, he took charge of a section on his own initiative, and rendered great assistance to the N.C.O. in charge of the platoon. he was a fine example of courage and coolness to his comrades.'
