Throughout this period he showed an utter disregard for personal safety and set a splendid example to his fellow bearers. As a result of his skilfull leadership many wounded were evacuated with theleast possible delay under the most trying and adverse conditions.'

'On the 2nd September in the neighbourhood of PERONNE this N.C.O. led and carried with his squad of Bearers for the whole day through a heavy machine gun and shell barrage, thus steadily evacuating cases to the Relay posts from the R.A.P. He also displayed splendid courage and leadership in organising and leading parties to bring wounded from PERONNE itself under heavy enemy shell fire. His conduct was a splendid example to the bearers under him.'
