War service: enlisted 8 April 1915. Embarked from Australia, 17 June 1915. Joined 8th Bn, Gallipoli, 6 August 1915; evacuated to No. 1 General Stationary Hospital, Mudros, 19 October 1915. Disembarked Alexandria, Egypt, 7 January 1916.

Appointed Lance Corporal, 17 February 1916; temporary Corporal, 26 February 1917. Admitted to 1st Stationary Hospital, Tel-el-Kebir, 7 March 1916; rejoined unit, 22 March 1916. Embarked from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 26 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 31 March 1916. Found guilty of being absent without leave 3 hours, Marseilles, 1 April 1916; penalty: reduced to the ranks. Injured shoulder, admitted to 12th Casualty Clearing Station, 15 April 1916; discharged to unit, 28 April 1916. Transferred to 2nd Field Company Engineers, 10 June 1916. Admitted to hospital (scalded foot), 25 September 1916. Admitted to 1st Convalescent Depot with venereal disease, 24 November 1916; discharged 16 January 1917; total treatment, 54 days. Admitted to 18th General Hospital, Camiers, with mumps, 18 January 1917; rejoined unit, 21 February 1917.

Reduced to the rank of Sapper after being found guilty of creating a disturbance, 22 November 1917. Found guilty of drunkenness; awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No. 1 and fined 35 shillings. Appointed Lance Corporal, 17 December 1917.

Wounded in action; remained at duty, 7 June 1918. Admitted to 2nd Field Ambulance (bronchitis), 12 October 1918; transferred to England, 19 October 1918, and admitted to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 8 November 1918. Transferred to Hospital, Weymouth, 14 November 1918; to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 25 November. Embarked from England on board HT 'Ulysses', 18 January 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 10 March 1919 (diagnosed as having chronic bronchitis). Discharged, 2 May 1919.
