'For gallant conduct and devotion to duty. At the attack on WESTHOEK RIDGE on 20th September 1917, acting as a Stretcher Bearer, he dressed and carried in wounded men under very heavy fire and saved man lives. He showed the utmost contempt for danger and personal safety, and set a splendid example to all N.C.O.s and men alike who speak in glowing terms of his work.'
