War service: Egypt, Western Front

Joined 54th Bn, Ferry Post, Egypt, 20 April 1916.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916.

Wounded in action, 20 July 1916 (gun shot wound, right arm, left knee), and admitted to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station, and transferred to 32nd Stationary Hospital, Wimereux; to England, 22 July 1916, and admitted to Queen's (Civil) Hospital, affiliated with 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, 23 July 1916 (gun shot wound, left knee: severe); transferred to Highbury Volunteer Aid Detachment (VAD) Hospital, Moore Green, Birmingham, 5 October 1916; discharged to No 1 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 27 October 1916.

Found guilty, 18 November 1916, of being absent without leave from 3 pm, 11 November, till 8.45 pm, 16 November 1916: awarded 7 days' confined to camp, and forfeited 6 days' pay under Royal Warrant.

Marched into 14th Training Bn, Hurdcott, 17 November 1916.

Tried by District Court Martial, Hurdcott, 22 February 1917, on charges of (1) being absent without leave from 8.30 am, 28 December 1916, until apprehended at Farnham at about 10 am, 27 January 1917; (2) losing by neglect his equipment and regimental necessaries in that he at Hurdcott on 26 January 1917 was deficient one pair of boots; (3) an act to the prejudice of good order and discipline in that he at Farnham on 27 January 1917 had in his possession two (2) documents purporting to a genuine pass well knowing that they were not genuine; pleaded guilty to charges (1) and (3), not guilty to charge (2); found guilty on all three charges; awarded 90 days' detention, and forfeiture of 146 days' pay.

Admitted to Wandsworth Detention Barracks, 22 February 1917.

Remainder of sentence (13 days) remitted as from 9 May 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 26 June 1917; rejoined Bn, in the field, 21 February 1917.

Admitted to 14th Field Ambulance, 11 February 1918 (influenza), and transferred to 5th Divisional Rest Station; to Liverpool Merchants Hospital, Etaples, 13 February 1918 (colic); to No 6 Convalescent Depot, Etaples, 21 April 1918; to Base Depot, Havre, 26 April 1918; rejoined 24th Bn, in the field, 15 May 1918.

Found guilty, 3 March 1919, of being absent from fatigue parade, 2 March 1919: awarded forfeiture of 3 days' pay.

Found guilty, 10 March 1919, of being absent without leave from 10 am to 8.30 pm, 9 March 1919: admonished and forfeited 1 day's pay under Royal Warrant.

Marched out to England, 22 May 1919; marched into No 5 Group, Weymouth, 23 May 1919.

Discharged in London, 13 October 1919.

War service: 4 years 31 days (of which 3 years 220 days were abroad)

Subsequent to discharge married Marie Germaine LAMENDIN, spinster, aged 18, at Townhall, Level-Claudeville, Belgium, 14 May 1919.
