Military Medal 'Performed excellent work as stretcher bearer. All ransk speak highly of his skill and sympathy in handling wounded men and his devotion to duty was most marked during the operations on BROODSEINDE RIDGE on 9th October, 1917.'
Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 76 Date: Bar to Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty near RAINECOURT, east of AMIENS, on 9th August 1918. The Company had been compelled to withdraw 300 yards, leaving a number of wounded. The enemy were sniping the stretcher bearers. These two bearers [Proudfoot and 4644 A. Speerin] went out in front of the forward posts under very heavy machine gun fire, and in full view of the enemy cleared the wounded. The made 5 trips in daylight and 2 after dark, only stopping when all the wounded had been cleared.'
