'At BRAY on the 24th August, 1918, this N.C.O. displayed great courage and initiative during the attack. His Company encountered strong opposition, one machine gun in particular giving trouble and inflicting casualties on our men. Tem[porary]. Sergeant PURTON although himself wounded, immediately organised a party and rushed the post, dislodged it without loss to his men. He rendered very appreciable services on the consolidating line organising and disposing posts and materially aiding his Company Commander. His skill and leadership merits the highest praise.'
