Military Medal 'Is recommended for conspicuous gallantry and great devotion to duty in action near HAMEL WOOD, east of CORBIE on 4th July, 1918. Throughout the operation, this N.C.O. displayed great dash and magnificent courage. In the early stages of the attack he assisted greatly in keeping the men together and leading them on. Just prior to reaching the final objective his Platoon Commander was wounded, and he immediately assumed command. His work in the consolidation was excellent, and he showed great judgment in the selection of positions, and thereby saved many lives. He set an excellent example and greatly inspired the men under his command by his cheerfulness and coolness.'
