Joined 5th Light Horse Regiment, Maadi, Egypt, 7 January 1916.

Admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Abbassia, 23 February 1916 (venereal disease); discharged to unit, 14 March 1916.

Transferred to 14th Field Artillery Brigade, and posted to 53rd Batttery, Tel el Kebir, 27 March 1916. Mustered as Driver, Ferry Post, 11 April 1916.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 20 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 30 June 1916.

Admitted to 8th Australian Field Ambulance, 8 January 1917 (influenza); transferred to No 1 New Zealand Stationary Hospital, Amiens, 25 January 1917; to Ambulance Train, 27 January 1917, and admitted to 32nd Stationary Hospital, Wimmereux. Transferred to England, 5 February 1917, County of London Hospital, Horton, 6 February 1917 (bronchitis, slight). Discharged on furlough, 12 March 1917, to report to No 1 Training Depot, Perham Downs, 27 March 1917.

Poceeded overseas to France, 2 July 1917; rejoined 14th Field Artillery Brigade, in the field, 9 July 1917.

Admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance, 15 October 1917 (scabies), and transferred same day to 17th Casualty Clearing Station; to to 7th Canadian General Hospital, 26 October 1917; transferred to 20th General Hospital, Camiers, 26 October 1917; to No 6 Convalescent Depot, Etaples, 14 January 1918; to 5th Convalescent Depot, 17 January 1918; to Australian General Base Depot, Cayeux, 2 March 1918; rejoined unit, in the field, 19 March 1918.

On leave to United Kingdom, 5 September 1918. Declared an illegal absentee as from 20 September 1918 by Court of enquiry, 27 January 1919.

District Court Martial, Warwick Square, London, 30 April 1919: pleaded guilty to charge of while on Active Service absenting himself without leave, in that he in the field on the 20 September 1918 absented himself without leave from his Unit until he surrendered himself to the Military Authorities in London at 8.45 pm on 21 April 1919; pleaded guilty: awarded 9 months' detention.

Admitted to Lewes Detention Barracks, England, to undergo 9 months' detention, 3 May 1919.

Discharged from Lewes Detention Barracks to No 5 Group, Weymouth, 18 June 1919; sentence suspended on release from prison.

Married Nancy LANE, spinster, aged 27, Register Office, Marylebone, London, 9 July 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Mahana', 25 September 1919; disembarked Sydney, 10 November 1919, for onward travel to Brisbane; discharged, Brisbane, 28 December 1919.
