Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When in charge of a Lewis gun section his post was blown in and all his team put out of action. He personally repaired the gun, carried it forward single handed to a shell hole and from there brought flanking fire to bear upon the enemy, thereby smashing their attack. Later on he was again blown up by a shell, and his gun smashed; whereupon he obtained another, and continued in action single handed after all his men were killed. His fearlessness was exceptional.'
