War service: embarked from Sydney, 5 April 1916. Taken on strength, 2nd Light Horse Regiment, Egypt, 9 May 1916. Transferred to Artillery Details, Tel el Kebir, 12 May 1916.

Taken on strength, Anzac Provost Corps, Tidworth, England, 1 January 1917. Appointed Lance Corporal (date not recorded); found guilty on 3 May 1917 of creating a disturbance after lights out had been sounded, and of failing to comply with an order: reverted to the ranks. Transferred to Australian Field Artillery Details, 29 August 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France via Southampton, 12 October 1917; marched in to Australian General Base Depot, Rouelles, 13 October 1917. Marched out to 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, 16 October 1917; taken on strength, 3rd FAB, Belgium, 16 October 1917. Unit moved the France, 21 July 1918.

On leave to England, 22 October 1918; rejoined unit in the field, 8 November 1918. To hospital, sick, 28 December 1918. Evacuated to England and admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, 15 January 1919. Discharged from 1st Field Ambulance, 26 February 1919. Total venereal disease treatment: 61 days.

Commenced return to Australia on board HMT 'Czar' from Liverpool, 24 March 1919; transshipped to HS 'Dongola' at Alexandria, 10 April 1919. Arrived Melbourne, 16 May 1919; discharged in Brisbane, 6 July 1919.
