Military Medal

'For conspicuous devotion to duty during the period 16th/17th September, 1918, to 11th November, 1918. During the attack near VILLERET on the 18th September, 1918, this N.C.O. showed great gallantry. When the attack commenced Sergeant READ was in command of the right flank platoon of the Battalion and led his men forward until held up by an enemy post of one machine gun and ten men. He immediately rushed the post, killing two and capturing the remainder of the garrison. Later when 50 percent of his platoon had become casualties he reorganised his men and formed a defensive right flank, personally maintaining liaison with the attacking Battalion on our right. Owing to this N.C.O.s utter disregard of personal danger, he set a splendid example to his platoon.'
